How to Set Boundaries and Stop Pushy Salespeople

How to Set Boundaries and Stop Pushy Salespeople

Pushy salespeople are a huge pain. They fill your email inbox with junk and call your phone constantly. This wastes the time you need to spend running your shop and taking care of your customers. You can stop this right now by setting tough boundaries.

How to Clearly Say “No”

The biggest mistake business owners make is trying to be too nice. If you say you are just too busy right now or ask them to check back next month, the salesperson thinks you want them to call again later. You have to tell them a direct no.

Send one email that leaves zero doubt. Use full words like “do not” instead of shortened words or contractions like “don't,” because full words sound much more official. Tell them the product does not fit your needs and that you are not buying it. Tell them to take your name off their list and stop contacting you.

Here is a simple message you can copy and use:

Hi Name,

We have looked at your information and your product does not work for our business. We are not moving forward.

Please update your system to remove my phone number and email from your lists. Do NOT contact me again about this service. If our needs change later, we know how to find you.

Thank you for your time.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Your time is worth money. When a pushy salesperson interrupts your day, they take your mind off your workers, your tasks, and your clients.

This behavior also tells you a lot about how that company treats people. If a vendor cannot respect your choices before you pay them, they will not respect you after they have your money. Good technology companies should help teach you, not bother you. High-pressure sales tricks typically mean the product is not actually very good.

Block the Emails Automatically

If a salesperson ignores your email and keeps bothering you, you can use technology to block them. You do not have to get mad. You just have to set up a basic computer filter to do the work for you.

If your company uses Gmail, you can block their whole website. Open Gmail on your computer. Click the search options icon located on the right side of the top search bar.

In the box labeled From, type the vendor's website domain with the @ symbol in front of it. This catches every salesperson from that company, not just one person.

Click the button at the bottom of the window that says Create filter. Check the box that says Skip the Inbox to archive it. Then check the box that says Apply the label, make a new folder called Vendor Noise, and click the final button to finish. Now their emails go straight to that hidden folder and will never pop up on your screen again.

At Coleman Technologies, we think computers should make your workday easier, not more chaotic. To get some help keeping your network clean and quiet, give our team a call at (604) 513-9428.
